Eastern Art Gallery presents 'Circe: A Goddess of Our Time' through April

Willimantic, CT (01/29/2024) — The Art Gallery at Eastern Connecticut State University will present "Circe: A Goddess of Our Time" until April 15. Part of Eastern's Big Read program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, the exhibition is based on Madeline Miller's bestselling novel "Circe."

The gallery's hours for the spring 2024 semester are Fridays through Mondays, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Tuesdays and Thursdays, noon to 7 p.m.; and Wednesdays, noon to 4 p.m. Entry is free and open to the public.

"Circe: A Goddess of Our Time" opened on Nov. 7 and continues to be an expression of female empowerment for artists through Circe's story.Featured artists include June Ahrens, Emma Amos, Marilyn Belford, Lesley Dill, Mary Beth Edelson, Jenny Holzer, Katazyna Konieczzka, Barbara Kruger, Norma Minkowitz, Ree Morton and Grace Wapner.

According to Hannah Petrikovsky, who is coordinating the Art Gallery at Eastern over the spring semester, Konieczzka's "exquisite costumes" are recent additions to the exhibition.

"This exhibition joins Circe, Miller, and the artists from a long line of feminist activists who have deployed the magic of words and imagery to communicate and inspire," said Art Gallery Director Julia Wintner. "Like Circe, they are also sorcerers whose art casts a spell on us - healers of our confused bodies and minds; guides on our journey toward the light."

Circe's magic also extends to the J. Eugene Smith Library, where portraits of Circe can be viewed on the second floor until April 17.

On April 17, Eastern will commemorate the end of its Big Read program with a virtual keynote featuring New York Times bestselling author Madeline Miller.
