Eastern to Host 4 'University Hour' Events in February

Willimantic, CT (02/01/2018) — Eastern Connecticut State University will host four University Hour events in February. University Hour is a series of cultural events that occurs every Wednesday in locations across campus. All events are from 3 to 4 p.m. and open to the public. Admission is free.

On Feb. 7 in the Fine Arts Instructional Center Concert Hall, music group Cuatro Puntos will share their stories of time spent partnering with Afghanistan's only music school over the past four years. Committed to global cooperation and peace through the writing, teaching and performing of music worldwide, Cuatro Puntos have worked on The Rosegarden of Light project to bring voices back to those who have been creatively oppressed.

On Feb. 14 in the Student Center Theatre, Gary Ford - an assistant professor of Africana Studies at Lehman College - will make an appearance. In addition to his writing and teaching, Ford helped produce the 2012 award-winning documentary "Justice is a Black Woman: The Life and Work of Constance Baker Motley" alongside Michael Calia, director of the Quinnipiac University Ed McMahon Mass Communications Center, and scriptwriter Susan Bailey.

On Feb. 21 in the Fine Arts Instructional Center's Proscenium Theatre, the Judy Dworin Performance Project will perform selections from their piece "Brave in a New World" to highlight the voices of those who have been released from prison. The dancers and speakers, paired with a sound score, aim to help the audience understand the effects of incarceration and reentry through real-world experiences.

On Feb. 28 in the Student Center Theatre, Eastern will hold the Martin Luther King, Jr. Distinguished Service Awards ceremony. The awards, established in 1996, remember King's altruistic efforts as his philosophies continue to have a strong impact today. Three people, including an Eastern student, an Eastern faculty or staff member and a member of Connecticut community-at-large who uphold the values of awareness, inclusion and social justice will be honored.
