Eastern Baseball Player Alex Zachary of Somers Named 2017 CSWA Male Athlete-of-the-Year

2018 Jan 3

Eastern Connecticut State University student Alex Zachary '17 of Somers has been named the 2017 Connecticut Male Athlete-of-the-Year by the Connecticut Sports Writer's Alliance. The two-time All-American centerfielder is the first Eastern athlete to be selected for the honor since Eastern baseball player Basilio Ortiz was recognized in 1991. Zachary's major is Sociology.

After transferring to Eastern in 2016, Zachary compiled a two-year total of 120 hits, 78 runs batted in, 36 stolen bases, 19 home runs and a .388 batting average. At the beginning of the 2017 season, Zachary set an Eastern record by recording a hit in 35 straight games. He has accrued his fair share of accolades while at Eastern, being named both the 2017 New England Division III and Little East Conference Player-of-the-Year last spring.

The Little East Conference (LEC) was established in 1986 as a single-sport league by six public institutions throughout New England. The LEC has since become a multi-sport league with eight primary members, six affiliate members and 19 championships.

Eastern offers a broad-based, Division III athletic program aimed at safeguarding the amateur aspects of the various sports and maintaining the proper perspective of athletics within Eastern's academic mission. By placing emphasis on the values of equity, diversity, sportsmanship, health and wellbeing, Eastern's athletic program encourages students to contribute more effectively to our society and live richer, fuller lives.
