Eastern Connecticut State University Student Stacei Browne of Uncasville Helps Organize Gambling Awareness Campaign

2013 Apr 30

A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students recently assisted in organizing a gambling awareness campaign.

Stacei Browne '13 of Uncasville, CT, participated in the effort. Browne's major is Social Work.

Browne worked with Thomas Broffman, assistant professor of social work, to coordinate the campaign during the spring semester. The mission of the gambling awareness campaign was to educate the Eastern Connecticut State University community about the warning signs and issues of problem gambling.

The campaign consisted of several events that ran through April. These events included a lecture on Feb. 21, featuring Joe Turbessi, author of "Into the Muck," who spoke about how his experiences with gambling led to problems in his social and financial life and how he eventually recovered; residence hall events that addressed student gambling problems; and a panel of six recovering gamblers that took place on April 4. Guest speakers discussed their experiences and informed the community about available support programs.

"The students organizing this semester-long project not only acquired invaluable social work experience, but educated their peers about the risks associated with gambling," said Broffman. "They were involved as part of their community practice and statistics classes in order to integrate classroom learning with community experience."

The Gambling Awareness Campaign at Eastern was sponsored by the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling (CCPG). The CCPG can be reached at http://www.ccpg.org or (860) 664-3996.
