Eastern Connecticut State University's Emily Becher Named All-New England

2014 Dec 11

Emily Becher '18, of Brooklyn majoring in Political Science, has been named fourth-team NCAA Division III All-New England Region by the National Soccer Coaches' Association of America (NSCAA).

Becher becomes only the fourth Eastern freshman - second one selected at the forward position -- in 27 years named to the all-region team, following defender Gia Karahalios in 2012, forward Julia Neilson in 1998 and keeper Anna Werfel in 1988.

Thirteen players were named to the first and second teams and 11 to the third and fourth teams. Only four of the 48 all-region selections are freshmen.

A first-team All-LEC pick last month, Becher led the conference in game-winning goals (7) and finished second in goals (18) and points (37). Only one previous Eastern player - Lisa Matukaitis - has scored more goals in a season in program history (23 goals as a senior in 1992 and 22 as a freshman in 1988).

Becher concluded her first season by scoring at least one goal in each of the final seven matches of the year - a record formerly held by Matukaitis in her freshman season of 1988 and later equalled by Daniela Marchitto in 2011. In those final seven matches, Becher totalled 11 goals and an assist, four times recording two goals in a match.

Four times named Little East Rookie-of-the-Week and once the Offensive Player-of-the-Week, Becher becomes the program's 25th all-region player since 1988.

This past fall, Eastern (13-6-1) won at least ten matches for the 13th time in the last 14 seasons under 15th-year head coach Chris D'Ambrosio. The third-seeded Warriors brought an eight-game winning streak into the semifinal round of the LEC playoffs this past fall before being eliminated by second-seeded UMass Boston.
