Eastern Connecticut Student Solinda Keth of Quaker Hill Participates in "Green Lights" Project

2013 Apr 1

Several local Eastern Connecticut State University students recently participated in the Willimantic Screen Project in partnership with Thread City Development, Inc., the town of Windham, CT, and the Willimantic Brewing Company. The "Green Lights" project promotes recognition of the Last Green Valley, a National Heritage Corridor located in eastern Connecticut and south-central Massachusetts.

Solinda Keth '14 of Quaker Hill, CT, contributed to the project. Keth's major is Visual Arts.

Students worked on the project under the guidance of June Bisantz, professor of digital art and design. The video projection project was part of the Last Green Valley's Third Annual Green Lights project. The focus of the project was to encourage local residents and businesses to show their support for the National Heritage Corridor by installing at least one light bulb with a green-colored, energy-efficient bulb during the January to March time period.

The exhibition, which is visible at night, runs until March 15. The images are displayed on the High Street portion of the facade of the Willimantic Brewing Company, which is located on the corner of High Street and 967 Main Street in Willimantic.

Digital art and design students from Bisantz's Graphic Design II class, along with local artists, contributed images to the project. The images are presented as a sequential video projection displaying approximately 40 different interpretations of green light. Each student contributed two images to the project.

According to Bisantz, "Young people are very concerned about the environment – more than we may realize. They respond enthusiastically to any project that allows them to make a statement about the world we live in. Projects like this one demonstrate the power of creative thinking to send a message and make a difference in the community and in the world. Artists have the ability to lead and inspire. I want my students to learn that, experience it, and take it with them when they leave Eastern."
