2015 Sep 28

During the spring semester, Alexandra Steel '17 of Foxboro embraced the opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica. When asked about the decision to study abroad, Steel replied "Experiencing Costa Rica was the time of my life! I want to minor in Spanish and coming here and taking intensive courses helped me to achieve my goal of speaking the language fluently. Also, I think it is so important to experience different cultures and to put yourself into new situations." Describing the experience, Steel who majors in Psychology, said "I learned so much and loved every moment of my time there. On the weekends I was able to travel with friends and teachers to beautiful nature preserves, beaches, volcanoes, cloud gardens and even to different cities. San Jose is such a vibrant city and I wanted to take full advantage of my time there. I taught English classes to local students and families in my free time, and also volunteered at a local orphanage. Studying abroad is the best thing that I have ever done and I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity."

The Study Abroad Office at Eastern Connecticut State University helps many students study abroad each year. Study abroad allows students to experience the world and the global community. They can gain cultural insight while living and studying along with students of a host country for a full semester or academic year, while earning Eastern Connecticut State University credits.

Studying abroad allows students to become more independent and confident. It helps them improve their communication skills, learn new languages, and experience cultural differences first-hand. Students can build a strong resume as well as earn credits, all while traveling the world. Many students take the opportunity to study abroad during their time at Eastern.
