Eastern Student-Athlete Emily Becher a part of Nationally Recognized Soccer Team

2018 Jan 3

Eastern Connecticut State University was one of only two institutions in the country to have its men's and women's soccer programs qualify for a 2017 United Soccer Coaches (USC) Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award.

Among the students who played for the soccer program during the fall 2017 season was Emily Becher '18 of Brooklyn, who played forward. Becher majors in Political Science and Sociology.

The men's soccer team received the fewest penalties in the Little East Conference in 2017 by a wide margin, averaging 10.6 cards per year, compared to 19.3 cards for other teams in the conference. This past fall semester also marked the seventh time in the past 18 seasons in which the women's team recorded two or less cards for the entire season.

While 104 different two- and four-year soccer institutions were awarded based on yellow cards accumulated by players and coaches per match over the course of this past season (a single red card disqualifies institutions from consideration), only two had both its men's and women's program qualify: Eastern and Anderson University.

The men's team received a bronze rating and the women secured gold. This is the fourth time in the past six years the men's team has been awarded the honor, and the fifth time in the past six years for the women.

The Little East Conference (LEC) was established in 1986 as a single-sport league by six public institutions throughout New England. The LEC has since become a multi-sport league with eight primary members, six affiliate members and 19 championships.

Eastern offers a broad-based, Division III athletic program aimed at safeguarding the amateur aspects of the various sports and maintaining the proper perspective of athletics within Eastern's academic mission. By placing emphasis on the values of equity, diversity, sportsmanship, health and wellbeing, Eastern's athletic program encourages students to contribute more effectively to our society and live richer, fuller lives.
