Eastern Student-Athlete Matthew Pinney of Storrs Wins Track Athlete-of-the-Week

2018 Feb 5

Eastern Connecticut State University student-athlete Matthew Pinney '19 of Storrs was named the Little East Conference (LEC) Track Athlete-of-the-Week for the week of Jan. 28. This is the first LEC weekly honor of Pinney's career. Pinney's major is Physical Education.

Over the course of his career at Eastern, Pinney has performed well at Springfield College's Massasoit Classic. This past week at the classic, Pinney won the indoor shot for the third time in his career. He set a personal record in the event with a 14.08 meter shot to beat a field of 14 contestants. The shot ranks as the seventh-longest in Eastern's history.

The Little East Conference was established on April 28, 1986, as a single sport league by six public institutions located throughout New England. The LEC member men's and women's basketball teams commenced play in 1986-87 with double round-robin regular season and six-team championship tournament. The Little East Conference has since become a multi-sport league with eight primary members, six affiliate members and 19 championships.

Eastern offers a broad-based, Division III athletic program aimed at safeguarding the amateur aspects of the various sports and maintaining the proper perspective of athletics within Eastern's academic mission. By placing emphasis on the values of equity, diversity, sportsmanship, health and wellbeing, Eastern's athletic program encourages students to contribute more effectively to our society and live richer, fuller lives.
