Eastern Student Brenna Casey of Higganum Inducted Into Spanish Honor Society

2016 May 16

Eastern Connecticut State University's World Languages and Cultures Department held its annual induction ceremony for Sigma Delta Pi, the international honor society for Spanish, in the President's Dining Room on April 30. The ceremony, featured a luncheon and reception, as well as recognized the academic excellence of students majoring in Spanish.

Among the inductees was Brenna Casey '16 of Higganum, who majors in Elementary Education and Spanish.

"As a Spanish major I get a little closer to uniting the world," said Casey. "One of the biggest things that separates countries and cultures is the language barrier. I wanted to do my part to connect with the Spanish speaking citizens in the United States. As a future elementary school teacher, I feel it's important that all students and their parents have equal opportunities, no matter what their primary language is."

To qualify, students had to participate in three years of college-level Spanish, at least three semester-hours of Hispanic literature or culture and civilization at the junior level; a 3.0 GPA in all Spanish courses taken; a ranking in the upper 35 percent of their class; and a completion of at least three semesters.
