Eastern Student Brittany Chabot of Dayville Engaged in Fall 2015 Internship

2015 Nov 30

A number of Eastern students commit to student internships as an on-site practical work experience with a company or organization that can provide them with firsthand knowledge of a career field. The internship is usually related to the student's major or is directly related to the student's career interest. They often complement the student's coursework, can incorporate skills and classroom experience into the workplace and assist the student in developing new abilities and skills.

Brittany Chabot '16 of Dayville is working as an intern at EastConn's Educational and Vocational Center. Chabot's major is Psychology.

EastConn's well-respected clinical day treatment program is designed for K-12 students who need a highly structured, supportive, therapeutic environment in order to achieve academic and behavioral success.

Chabot's tasks include supervising and assisting teaching 5 - 8th grade children with behavioral disorders. She also implements behavioral management and reward systems.

According to Chabot, "My favorite part is the satisfaction I experience when observing kind acts and cooperation among students in the classroom. I also enjoy when the kids understand their work and experience a sense of engagement in their assignments because it represents a progression and marks their potential to succeed beyond their psychological disorders."

Chabot credits Psychology Professor Madeleine Fugere for much of her success. "I enjoy her teaching style and appreciate her efforts in providing me with previous research articles that support my interests. She is also my thesis advisor for the Honors Program project I am working on -- I will be researching how attachment styles and social media affect the satisfaction of long term relationships."

Chabot plans to pursue a master's or doctorate program after graduation. She believes her internship will help her in applying to graduate school. "It also has provided me with some experience with children and has made me realize that I would like to pursue family therapy. In addition, I can apply some of the behavioral management mechanisms from this site to future work positions," added Chabot.
