Eastern Student Bryan Frankovitch of Manchester Completes Global Field Course to Ghana

A group of Eastern students recently traveled to Ghana, West Africa, with Professor Shelly Gimenez. The trip, which focused on health care, public health and the education sectors of deveoping counties, offered a unique opportunity for the students who accompaned her.

Bryan Frankovitch '16 of Manchester was among these students. Frankovitch's major is Health Sciences.

The global field course trip offered three internship credits through the Health Sciences major at Eastern. As part of their field experience students visited clinical facilities in surrounding communities of Agona-Asamang in the Ashanti region of Ghana where they were able to compare and contrast health systems in the United States and Ghana. They visited clinics, hospitals, schools, an orphanage and public service agencies.

At Mampong Hospital in rural Agona, students participated in hospital rounds, observed the operating theater, conducted well-baby clinics, participated in the maternal and child health clinic, conducted patient intakes and gained valuable experience in the emergency room.

The students also engaged in local culture. The lived in a compound in the rural village of Assamang and interacted with public health and nursing students from Withrow University College in Agona-Assamang, which was founded by Eastern Biology Professor Yaw Nsiah. Weekends were spent visiting historic sites including an elephant preserve, ancient slave quarters, a monkey preserve, waterfalls, various villages and local outdoor markets.
