Eastern Student Catherine Falvey Presents Math Research in San Diego

2018 Feb 1

Eastern Connecticut State University mathematics student Catherine Falvey '18 of West Hartford presented her research on diagonalizable matrices at the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM) in San Diego, CA, from Jan. 10-13.

Falvey, who majors in Economics and Mathematics, co-presented her research "Enumerating 2x2 and 3x3 Diagonalizable Matrices over the Ring of Integers Modulo a Power of a Prime" with her mentor, mathematics professor Megan Heenehan.

To prepare for the meeting, Falvey participated in a Research Experience for Undergraduates this past summer, hosted by the National Science Foundation. As part of the program, Falvey spent eight weeks at California State University-Channel Islands conducting research. Upon completion of their research, Falvey and Heenehan traveled to San Diego to present.

"Presenting at JMM at the Undergraduate Poster Session was an amazing experience," said Falvey. "There were so many projects to look at and I received great comments from the judges and other professors that will help me grow my skills as an undergraduate researcher."

The JMM is presented in part with the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.
