Eastern Student Christina Welch of Farmington Wins Library Research Award

2016 May 19

Because of their creative and effective use of library resources, two Eastern Connecticut State University students were recognized at the Library Research Awards in May.

Christina Welch of Farmington, who majors in Pre-Secondary Education and Biology, was the freshman/sophomore winner. Mentored by Biology Professor James Camp, her research was titled "Effect on Different Substrates on the Transcription Level of the Lac Operon in Escherichia Coli.".

"When I started doing this research it was for a class assignment," said Welch. "As I continued I began to get really interested and wanted to do a lot more. I started reading more articles and looking more into the topic, I really took advantage and used these awards as a learning opportunity."

The Library Research Awards were established to recognize exemplary student research projects that demonstrate the ability to locate, evaluate and apply information from the physical collections and online databases within Eastern's J. Eugene Smith Library.

A committee of faculty and library staff read and selected the award winners based on how well the papers document effective use of library resources.
