Eastern Student Clint Gosselin of East Hartford Selected as Spring 2016 Resident Assistant

2016 Jan 20

At Eastern Connecticut State University, resident assistants (RAs) are carefully selected by Office of Housing and Residential Life staff after a series of information sessions and personal interviews. As part of their employment, RAs are trained to assist in guiding students through their on-campus residential living experience. Their focus is to provide an environment that encourages success and positive student development.

Clint Gosselin '16 of East Hartford is an RA for the spring 2016 semester. Gosselin's major is History and Social Science and Sociology.

Each residence area is fully staffed by a team of RAs. Their training also provides them with skills to assist in creating a community environment conducive to individual and social growth. Each RA strives to empower students to identify needs and determine goals, provide opportunities for student involvement in the residential community and assist individual students in realizing and implementing a mature approach to personal conduct.

An RA's knowledge of the campus and community is invaluable in enhancing a student's University experience. In addition to other key tasks, RAs are also responsible for programming duties. As student leaders, they provide a variety of programs covering social, educational, community service issues and many more. In addition, they organize daily, as well as weekend programming ranging from small and informal to large-scale events.

"The RA position is extremely challenging. Our program was recently highlighted in University Business Magazine as a model for other programs in the country in regards to the evolving role of RAs," said Paul Serignese, assistant director for the Office of Housing and Residential Life. "Our RAs possess an average GPA of 3.35, well above our required 2.7. This is one of the highest standards in the country."
