Eastern Student Courtney DeNunzio of Stafford Springs Engaged in Internship

2016 Jan 7

A number of Eastern students commit to student internships as an on-site practical work experience with a company or organization that can provide them with firsthand knowledge of a career field. The internship is usually related to the student's major or is directly related to the student's career interest. They often complement the student's coursework, can incorporate skills and classroom experience into the workplace and assist the student in developing new abilities and skills.

Courtney DeNunzio '16 of Stafford Springs is working as an intern for Northwestern Mutual, one of the leading financial agencies in the world. DeNunzio's major is Economics.

DeNunzio was ranked third best Northwestern Mutual intern nationally and has been been offered a position with them beyond the internship. She went from working as an agent to being named a college unit captain. "I learned what the corporate world is about at Northwestern Mutual," she said.

As part of her internship, DeNunzio helps clients achieve lifelong financial security and assists them in making plans on how to safely spend their money. She meets with clients in order to determine their life goals and then helps them devise a financial plan to achieve those goals. She also helps clients execute their financial plan and works with them to help them stay financially stable.

"I learned how to self-manage while working for Northwestern Mutual because balancing school, coaching, cheerleading and internship work is a challenge," said DeNunzio.

"To find my internship, I researched certain companies pertaining to my major and learned about what they did. Then I chose a handful of the ones I was most interested in. Not only did I apply through the application portion of the web sites, but I also sent emails with my resume attached to the CEO, president, vice president and various department heads," said DeNunzio.
