Eastern Student Emilio Estrella of South Windsor Completes Successful Internship

2017 Jan 24

A number of Eastern students commit to student internships as an on-site practical work experience with a company or organization that can provide them with firsthand knowledge of a career field. The internship is usually related to the student's major or is directly related to the student's career interest. They often complement the student's coursework, can incorporate skills and classroom experience into the workplace and assist the student in developing new abilities and skills.

Emilio Estrella '17 of South Windsor completed an internship with the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College in New York City. Estrella's major is Labor Relations/Human Resource Management.

He functioned as an organizer and university assistant during his internship. His tasks included organizing and leading a national youth group initiative. According to Estrella, "I assisted in a wide range of duties -- anything from speaking at events to managing office tasks. My favorite part of the internship was meeting amazing people and making great connections. The paid travel is great too!"

"It's easy to become complacent and lose track of real-world applications when all you do is take classes all day. In my opinion, real-world experience is invaluable; it is equal to, and may even surpass, the importance of courses. The contacts I've made make me feel a lot better about the prospects for my future," says Estrella.

Estrella plans to attend law school after completing his undergraduate studies.
