2018 Jan 9

Julissa Martinez '18 of Torrington recently completed an internship for the Northwest CT Chamber of Commerce. Martinez's major is Communication.

As part of her internship tasks, Martinez participated in multiple events hosted by the chamber. Her responsibilities included event preparation and and interacting with attendees. She was also responsible for assisting with the chamber's newly initiated membership program.

"I learned that contacting members is a very resourceful way of connecting with other residents in town who might also be interested in the program," said Martinez.

Working as part of a team was particularly rewarding for Martinez. "My supervisor always asked for ideas and input. I felt very involved in the decision-making process. My internship provided a great opportunity to network with people and make connections. The courses I took at Eastern provided me with the skills necessary to successfully grasp some of my internship tasks," said Martinez. She is interested in pursuing a career in either public relations or advertising.

Her advice to other students? "Take advantage of the resources offered at Eastern's Center for Internships and Career Development. I received resume guidance and attended the career fair events, which helped me to network and connect with employers."
