Eastern Student Kaitlin Baldi of Lebanon Volunteers With Math Mania Tutor Program

Kaitlin Baldi '13 of Lebanon, was one of 10 volunteers staffing the Math Mania Camp held at Eastern Connecticut State University this past summer. Baldi is a History and Social Science major.

Eastern students and staff have completed their second year of the renowned and successful Math Mania camp. The Center of Community Engagement at Eastern worked with Drug Free Communities of Windham and the Caleb Foundation, which operates at Village Heights Apartments, to coordinate the proper funding for the program was provided by the Connecticut State University System Bridges Grant. "We want to make teaching fun, and a learning experience for student and tutor," said Kim Silcox, the director of Community Engagement. Eastern volunteers were responsible for individualized math tutoring to 25 Windham and Willimantic students.

The program focused on middle school students and provided an age appropriate curriculum. Engaging and fun activities were also planned at the camp. The program not only offered tutoring to Windham and Willimantic students, but provided invaluable skills to volunteers. "

Eastern Connecticut State University is part of the Connecticut State University System (CSUS) and is the state's public liberal arts university. Eastern serves more than 5,000 students each year on its Willimantic campus.
