Eastern Student Kathryn Peel of Wallingford Travels to Italy for Creative Writing Course

2015 Sep 15

Kathryn Peel '15 of Wallingford was part of a group of students from Eastern Connecticut State University that recently traveled to Florence, Italy, for a global field course. Peel's major is Elementary Education.

The class, "Creative Writing Abroad," was led by English Professor Christopher Torockio. It is an intensive writing course that encourages students to produce daily, original works of fiction in a foreign country.

In addition to using their class readings for inspiration, Peel and the other students on the trip were heavily influenced by the beautiful Tuscan scenery. Students stayed within minutes of the famous Duomo, a cathedral that has been that main church of Florence since 1436. They were also able to visit countless cultural landmarks such as the Galleria dell' Accademia, which houses Michelangelo's statue of David. The group also had the opportunity to explore different areas of Tuscany such as Siena, San Gimignano and Pisa.
