Eastern Student Kay Mullen of Fairhaven Engages in Successful Internship

2017 Mar 6

A number of Eastern students commit to student internships as an on-site practical work experience with a company or organization that can provide them with firsthand knowledge of a career field. The internship is usually related to the student's major or is directly related to the student's career interest. They often complement the student's coursework, can incorporate skills and classroom experience into the workplace and assist the student in developing new abilities and skills.

Kay Mullen '17 of Fairhaven completed an internship with Natchaug Hospital. Mullen's major is Communication.

Since Mullen's future career goal is to be a social media expert or work in public relations at a hospital, the internship she obtained was a perfect match.

Her internship with the hospital's social media division included searching for content that is appealing to people of all ages in order to invite readers to read more about mental health and wellness. She also proofreads and reviews soon-to-be published articles, makes necessary revisions and provides coworkers in her department with feedback.

Kay believes that the most interesting part of her internship was learning more about the health care system in Connecticut. "I realized that health is about so much more than your physical state -- it includes your mental health, which is a crucial part of being healthy as well."

Her advice to other students seeking internships? "Apply to as many internships as possible, even if you think you are underqualified. Just keep trying," said Kay. "Getting an internship at a company you are interested in will give you an advantage should regular positions ever open up at the location."
