Eastern Student Kaylei Roux of Colchester Travels to London for Global Field Course

2015 Sep 15

Kaylei Roux '15 of Colchester was one of five students from Eastern Connecticut State University who recently traveled to London, England, as part of a global field course with Psychology Professor Jenna Scisco. Roux's major is Psychology.

For this course, Roux and the other students worked with archival materials in the Wellcome Library and the British Library in order to construct a biography about their chosen British psychologist. Using these historic libraries, the students got the opportunity to handle handwritten notes and manuscripts written by famous psychologists, in addition to reading books and articles held in the archives. All of this gave them fantastic insight into each psychologist's life and work.

The trip offered students the opportunity to visit several sites that contributed to the field of psychology. They visited the Freud Museum and were able to see where psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud lived. In addition to to viewing the house and artifacts from Freud's life, they also attended other educational tours about Freud and his daughter Anna.

They also visited Bethlem Royal Hospital, which was founded in 1247, and now focuses primarily on mental health. This allowed the students to experience the history of psychology firsthand. Students also enjoyed the opportunity to visit the largest library in the British Museum. The museum holds a variety of priceless items, including the Rosetta Stone and Cleopatra's mummy.

In addition to visiting iconic landmarks such as Elizabeth Tower, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace, the students were able to travel outside of Britain and visit Amsterdam and Paris.
