Eastern Student Kiera Forstell of Ellington Engages in Successful Internship

2017 Apr 19

A number of Eastern students commit to student internships as an on-site practical work experience with a company or organization that can provide them with firsthand knowledge of a career field. The internship is usually related to the student's major or is directly related to the student's career interest. They often complement the student's coursework, can incorporate skills and classroom experience into the workplace and assist the student in developing new abilities and skills.

Kiera Forstell '17 of Ellington is currently engaged in an internship at the Day Kimball Healthcare/Family Advocacy Center in Putnam. Forstell's major is Psychology.

Forstell accepted her internship with the knowledge that the experience she gained would prove quite valuable in terms of her future career goal as a marriage and family therapist.

Her internship tasks include shadowing home visits in order to assist in educating new parents. She also attends Windham County DCF departmental meetings and is currently working on multiple projects for Day Kimball Hospital related to promoting awareness about various health care practices.

According to Forstell, "Every day there is a new article to read, meeting to attend or topic to discuss. I hope to learn about the different processes and people involved in each of my assignments so I can continue to gain experience related to the skills necessary for becoming a therapist."

Forstell advises other students interested in finding an internship to communicate with their professors about potential positions and to connect with the Center for Internships and Career Development.
