Eastern Student Lily Egan of Colchester Appointed To Serve On Connecticut Commission on Community Service

2014 Dec 3

Eastern Connecticut State University student Lily Egan '15 of Colchester, CT, was recently appointed by Governor Dannel Malloy to serve on the Connecticut Commission on Community Service. The commission administers community programs under the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993. She is one of 19 members on the commission statewide, and will serve a three-year term. Egan's major is Communication.

"This appointment is something I never would have dreamed of achieving when I was a freshman," said Egan. "I look forward to making a difference in the state in this capacity."

Egan has been heavily involved with service throughout Eastern's host town, Willimantic. As an underclassman she participated in the People Helping People club and was introduced to Eastern's Center for Community Engagement (CCE), where she now works as a senior student leader.

"Lily is dedicated and passionate about service to our community," said Kim Silcox, director of the CCE. "She has taken a leadership role within the CCE and has developed several new volunteer programs based on community needs. We are so fortunate to have her on our staff."

Some of the projects she has been involved in a variety of community service-based efforts including Puentes al Futuro (Bridges to the Future), an afterschool program for English language learners; volunteering at area soup kitchens and addiction recovery agencies; Eastern's Poverty Awareness Marathon food drive; Town Wide Town Pride, a cleanup and beautification event in Willimantic; and more. During the spring 2013 semester, she spent her spring break volunteering at a community garden in South Carolina.

After graduating Egan is interested in traveling, continuing to do service work and becoming fluent in Spanish. "Serving on the commission is definitely a step in the right direction," she said. "I hope to make some good connections while there, and to build on what I've learned in the classroom and on the job with the CCE."
