Eastern Student Logan Sharlow of Danbury Completes Successful Internship

2017 Jan 3

A number of Eastern students commit to student internships as an on-site practical work experience with a company or organization that can provide them with firsthand knowledge of a career field. The internship is usually related to the student's major or is directly related to the student's career interest. They often complement the student's coursework, can incorporate skills and classroom experience into the workplace and assist the student in developing new abilities and skills.

Logan Sharlow '17 of Danbury recently completed an internship at Perception Programs' Alternative in the Community (AIC) program in Willimantic. Sharlow's major is Psychology.

AIC is a community-based program which promotes structured support and supervision for community justice clients referred by the courts. The program promotes pro-social behavior and assists participants with case management, employment assistance, targeted interventions and community service opportunities so that they can make lifestyle changes. It also offers a successful alternative to incarceration. As participants develop healthy behaviors, the risk of repeat criminal behavior has been proven to diminish.

The participants are often pre-trial individuals who have been referred by a judge, bail commissioner or family services staffmember. They are ordered to participate in the AIC program as a condition of probation.

As part of her internship, Logan kept track of offenders who were recently released from jail. She also conducted case management sessions and ran group modules and other activities.

Logan said that she didn't know what her career goals and objectives were until she started working at her internship. "It was an eye-opening experience. I now have a better sense of the direction in which I want to go," said Logan.
