Eastern Student Lorena Fortunato of Cromwell Completes Study Abroad to Greece

2017 Jul 12

Lorena Fortunato '19 of Cromwell recently completed a study abroad trip to Greece. Fortunato's major is Psychology.

As part of her trip, Fortunato studied Cognitive Psychology, World History, Beginning Spanish II and Athens Across the Ages at the Hellenic American College in Athens.

"I chose to study there because it has been a dream destination of mine. I have been a huge mythology buff since I was a little girl and Greek mythology was definitely one of my favorites," said Fortunato.

"It is hard to choose any one thing as my favorite during my trip. The people I met were all extremely friendly and very willing to assist you. I became a regular at local eateries, which I enjoyed. The feeling there was very friendly."

"The most challenging part of the experience was getting used to where everything was. The language barrier was difficult to get past though everyone was very friendly and patient; we all got a laugh out of trying to understand each other."

While in Athens she visited the Acropolis and Philopappos Hill. She also visited other countries including Denmark, Dublin, Rome, Pompeii and Tuscany.

"I think studying abroad is a valuable experience because it helps people gain a global perspective and adapt to other cultures," said Fortunato.

Fortunato plans to attend graduate school to study psychology and hopes to eventually become a child therapist for either the juvenile court system, Department of Children and Families or a similar employer.

Studying abroad allows students to become more independent and confident. It helps them improve their communication skills, learn new languages, and experience cultural differences first-hand. Students can build a strong resume as well as earn credits, all while traveling the world. Many students take the opportunity to study abroad during their time at Eastern.
