2014 Jul 14

Eastern Connecticut State University student Mackenzie Fannon '15 of Bristol, CT, was recently selected as a summer intern for the NSF-funded Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) program. Mackenzie's major is Environmental Earth Science and her faculty mentor is Environmental Earth Science Professor Dickson Cunningham.

As part of her research at New Mexico Tech, Fannon is investigating earthquake hazards along the Mexican coastline. She is also researching precursor signals that may be able to be used to predict earthquakes in the future.

Fannon joins a group of IRIS interns that includes students from Stanford, Cal Tech and several Ivy League universities. She was awarded a full summer stipend for the eight-week internship, all travel and research costs, and funding to present her research at the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco in December.
