Eastern Student Mary Underwood of Woodstock Focuses on Successful Internship with CT Office of Adult Probation

2018 Feb 5

Eastern Connecticut State University student Mary Underwood '18 of Woodstock is currently engaged in a successful internship at the Office of Adult Probation in Danielson. Underwood's major is Sociology and Criminology.

As part of her duties she attends client meetings and assists in entering client information into the department's computer system. She also performs tasks at the local superior courthouse such as attending court proceedings and performing client intakes on new probationers.

"My favorite part of the internship is attending court. I find it very interesting to hear all of the cases and the outcomes of each one. I also enjoy sitting in on the client meetings at probation and hearing about how they are progressing throughout their probation period," said Underwood.

"My internship is definitely helping me get a sense of what it is that probation officers do, especially if that's the field I decide to get into. If I choose to do something else in the field of criminology, the internship will still give me a much better idea about the Judicial Branch's criminal justice system. Even though doing an internship is required for my Criminology major in order to graduate, I still would have pursued one because I think they are very beneficial for students."

"Internships are important for students because they give you real-world experience. You have the opportunity to do hands-on work in a professional environment, 'test drive' possible jobs and explore different career options. You also gain new connections and references. Doing an internship certainly looks great on your resume because you are building your experience," added Underwood.

After graduation Underwood is interested in possibly attending graduate school to pursue a field of study in investigations.
