2017 Dec 22

Mayra Perry '18 of Hartford recently completed an internship for the Office of U.S. Senator Chris Murphy. Perry's major is Spanish.

Perry was hired to work as an intern for Senator Murphy. After applying for positions in both Hartford and Washington D.C., she was thrilled to be chosen to work at the Capitol in D.C. "I felt extremely honored to be chosen for the interview alone," said Perry.

Her tasks included various organizational and communication-related assignments, as well as giving tours of the Capitol. "My internship was never boring; they kept us going with a variety of different tasks every day," said Perry.

Of the many takeaways from her experience, Perry learned the importance of keeping an open mind. "It's important to have your own opinion, but always attempt to consider and understand both sides of the situation. You can't be biased. The internship taught me to do more research and understand the background of topics I talk about."

Following graduation, Mayra is considering pursuing a career related to immigration law. "I want to assist people in terms of becoming U.S. residents, and eventually citizens." She plans to enter law school and is interested in working for a senator or representative.
