Eastern Student Mikayla Fish of Stafford Springs Performs in Korean Music Concert

2017 May 15

Eastern students from the Korean Samul Ensemble and Korean Music and Culture Class at Eastern Connecticut State University recently presented their annual spring Korean Music Concert in the Fine Arts Instructional Center (FAIC) Concert Hall.

Mikayla Fish '18 of Stafford Springs was one of the musicians who performed. Fish's major is English.

The Samul Ensemble focuses on traditional music and instruments of Korea. Students learn to play a variety of instruments in this ensemble as well as to learn the cultural heritage of the music they are performing. The majority of the student performers had no experience playing samul music prior to joining the ensemble, but expressed interest in music from a non-western tradition.

Directed by Professor Okan Hwang, the ensemble presented a collection of traditional Korean music, including folk songs and southeastern region rhythms by Isang Yun, Yiruma, Kim Min-ki.
