Eastern Student Ndack Sow of Mansfield Center Receives Accounting Scholarship

2016 Sep 13

Two Eastern Connecticut State University students were awarded scholarships at the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) reception on Sept. 7 in Hartford. Among the students was Ndack Sow '17 of Mansfield Center who majors in Accounting.

NABA is a nonprofit membership association that was created in 1969 to bridge the opportunity gap for people of color in the accounting, finance, and other business related professions. Since the creation of NABA, more than $11 million in scholarship funds has been provided to students entering accounting, finance and business professions.

The organization was created when nine African-American accounting professionals met in New York City and discussed the challenges and limited opportunities they believed were present in the accounting profession. Programs are offered to support the association's overall goals and objectives while creating opportunities for professionals and students seeking career growth.

Individuals, groups and organizations donate to NABA with the desire of breaking through the economic barrier. NABA offers an average of 50 national scholarships annually. In order to qualify for a NABA award students must be African American, be active members of NABA, and be enrolled at a four-year U.S. university with a minimum GPA. NABA offers three types of scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.
