Eastern Student Rebecca Sanderson of Wallingford Serves as Orientation Counselor

2013 Aug 14

Eastern Connecticut State University recently completed its Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) program. The program is mandatory for all new first-year students, and took place on campus between June 24-July 16.

Rebecca Sanderson '14 of Wallingford, CT, participated in the program as a student orientation counselor (SOC). Sanderson's major is Communication.

The program is designed to make first-year students aware of the resources available to them. It consisted of six two-day sessions, where approximately 170 incoming students per session attended informational meetings and social events.

The goal of a SOC is to guide their assigned group of new students around campus, accompanying them to informational meetings and social events. SOAR gives incoming students an opportunity to meet other new students, current student leaders, as well as members of Eastern's faculty and staff.

The goal of SOAR is to provide opportunities for new students to learn how to succeed academically and socially at Eastern. The program also serves to make incoming first-year students more comfortable with Eastern's campus. Students received academic advisement and then registered for the fall semester.
