Eastern Student Robert Zielinski of Bethany, CT, Named As Student Orientation Counselor

2015 Jun 5

Robert Zielinski '17 of Bethany is one of 16 Student Orientation Counselors (SOCs) for Eastern's upcoming Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) program. Zielinski's major is Pre-Secondary Education and Mathematics.

These SOCs will develop valuable leadership skills while simultaneously preparing incoming students for life at Eastern. As fellow students, orientation counselors are aware of what it takes to adapt to college life and can share their own experiences with the incoming students.

The program, designed to make first-year students aware of the many opportunities that Eastern offers, will consist of six two-day sessions between June 22 and July 10. At these sessions, Zielinski and the other SOCs will lead incoming students through informational meetings and social events. These informational meetings provide an important foundation which incoming students will use to adapt to college life. They learn about the many resources available to them at Eastern, such as the Academic Services Center and the Student Health Services office, as well as the Center for Internships and Career Development. In addition to learning of a variety of useful resources and tips, students who partake in the SOAR program are often able to make connections with people who will play an integral role in their four years at Eastern, whether as friends or faculty.

Zielinski, along with the other counselors, will show incoming students firsthand what life at Eastern might be like by spending the night in one of several residence halls, as well as eating at Hurley Hall, Eastern's dining hall.

SOAR is a valuable resource for new students to learn how to succeed academically and socially at Eastern. SOAR allows incoming students to meet other new students, current student leaders and members of the Academic Affairs and Student Affairs staff. Students are also able to receive academic advisement and register themselves for classes for the fall semester.
