Eastern Student Sabreena Croteau of North Kingstown Presents Research at History Conference

2015 Apr 8

A group of Eastern Connecticut State University history students recently attended and presented research at the "Making History: A CSU Conference," which was held at Southern Connecticut State University.

Sabreena Croteau '15 of North Kingstown was one of the students that presented their research. Croteau's research project was "Political Inclusion and Islamist Moderation: Case Studies of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan and FIS in Algeria."

The conference was the outcome of the collaboration and vision of the chairs of the four Connecticut State University Departments of History. It is hoped that it will become an annual event. The conference was conceived of as a prestigious forum for paper presentation and a preprofessional experience for the students. It was also intended to function as an opportunity for history students and faculty to network, become acquainted and develop cross-campus collaborations.

The students were accompanied by History Professors Anna Jaroszynska-Kirchmann, Roland Clark and Dominic DeBrincat. Students and professors alike presented research during various panels that were held throughout the day.

According to Professor DeBrincat, "I was proud of all of the students who presented at the conference. They were thoroughly prepared and professional, and maintained the high standards expected at an academic conference. While that comes from hard work and good advising, it also deeply reflects the collegial and encouraging atmosphere that our hosts at Southern worked so hard to provide."

"Watching these students shape their projects has been a privilege. They carefully considered theoretical literature before designing their projects, changed their arguments when new evidence emerged and took criticism seriously. The result of their efforts was evident when they presented at the conference; they shone as examples of what Eastern history students are capable of," said Professor Clark.

Eastern's history professors also presented research. Next year's conference will be held at Central Connecticut State University.
