Eastern Student Samantha Lew of Newtown Completes Semester-Long Internship

2015 Jul 28

Samantha Lew '15 of Newtown recently wrapped up an internship at Reliance House, a non-profit organization that focuses on community-based mental health services. Lew's major is Psychology.

Lew worked as a community support and recovery intern at Reliance House. Some of her tasks included completing paperwork and computer filing, assisting in coordinating programs with members and other tasks and projects around the office.

Lew spoke very highly of her time at Reliance House. "This internship has strengthened my resume as well as given me the confidence to be able to graduate in May and say to myself, 'I did it.'"

Lew was thankful for the opportunity to work in a setting where she got to see the effects of mental health services firsthand. "My internship helped me to determine the career I want to pursue. I saw that this is a team-oriented field where everyone is on the same page, and that was incredibly reassuring," she said.

The Center for Internships and Career Development is a valuable resource for students as it promotes strong partnerships between Eastern and potential employers. The Center plays an integral role in fostering excellence in career development and preparation among Eastern students and provides current information on the real workforce needs of employers, which students can use to their advantage. It also helps employment recruiters discover, recruit and hire Eastern students and alumni. They also work closely with companies who are hiring for internships or entry-level career positions in order to learn current and future workforce requirements. They then communicate this information to academic departments to align curriculum with labor market needs.
