Eastern Student Samantha Schwarz of Storrs Mansfield Participates in Environmental Earth Science Undergraduate Research Project

2014 Aug 27

Samantha Schwarz '15 of Storrs Mansfield, CT, recently completed an undergraduate research project related to her major in environmental earth science.

As part of the project, which took place in Lebanon, CT, she entered well bore and water analysis data from logs dating between 1970-2000. She entered information from current water samples collected by her professor and another student in order to track manganese levels over time. Her research assisted in mapping and comparing previous manganese levels to current levels based on the recent water samples.

Her faculty mentor is Professor Meredith Metcalf. According to Schwarz, "Obtaining hands-on experience really allows students to apply what they have learned in the classroom. You get exposure to working in your field of study; field work is important and it is a great opportunity to be chosen to work with a professor."

Schwarz plans to present her research at the 2014 AIPG/AHS National Conference in Arizona in September. The conference is hosted by the American Institute of Professional Geologists and the Arizona Hydrological Society.
