Eastern Student Talia Erris of Cheshire Wins Library Research Award

2016 May 19

Because of their creative and effective use of library resources, two Eastern Connecticut State University students were recognized at the Library Research Awards in May.

Talia Erris of Cheshire, who majors in Social Work and History, was the junior/senior winner. Mentored by History Professor Caitlin Carenen, her research paper was titled "Five Feet of Feminine Anarchy: Press Depictions of Emma Goldman From 1892-1901.".

Erris was intrigued by the story of Emma Goldman. "I wanted to write about a woman, and it's uncommon to hear of a female terrorist," said Erris. "The press actually never called her a terrorist, but there were a lot of things going on in the news about terrorism during that time in America, so it was a strong argument to take."

The Library Research Awards were established to recognize exemplary student research projects that demonstrate the ability to locate, evaluate and apply information from the physical collections and online databases within Eastern's J. Eugene Smith Library.

A committee of faculty and library staff read and selected the award winners based on how well the papers document effective use of library resources.
