Eastern student Katerina Mazzacane recognized at Kennedy Center Theatre Festival

2018 Mar 6

A number of creators and performers behind some of Eastern Connecticut State University's recent theatre productions were acknowledged at the Region I Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF). Held at Western Connecticut State University this past February, the festival is an annual event attended by more than 1,000 students and faculty from colleges across the Northeast.

Among the students was Katerina Mazzacane '19 of West Haven, who majors in History.

"Thread City" Stage Manager Katerina Mazzacane also received a $1,200 scholarship for her presentation on her experiences in "Thread City" as well as for her service in the festival's Stage Management Fellowship program.

"My experience at KCACTF provided me with many wonderful opportunities and experiences," said Mazzacane. "I attended several workshops and performances and was able to meet both professional and student stage managers. Not only did this allow me to learn and grow as a stage manager, but I was able to meet potential future colleagues. The talent I saw in the acting competition, the performances, and the tech competitions was truly astounding. I felt honored to have been invited to participate in such a festival. My experience during "Thread City" was truly a growing experience for me. Because the show had no dialogue and was strictly movement-based, this show made me tap into new skills I had never before used in stage management. My experience stage managing "Thread City" has helped me grow as a person, as a stage manager, and has truly opened doors to many wonderful opportunities in theater."

Thinking back on the festival, Eastern theatre professor Chase Rozelle said, "We've all had very rewarding experiences. Faculty and students alike have found profound opportunity and fellowship. I can't truly describe what it's like to be a member of such a large audience made up of only patrons who are also theatre practitioners passionate about their work. It's thrilling, affirming and hugely inspirational."

KCACTF recognizes and celebrates the finest and most diverse work produced in university and college theatre programs.
