Emily Lizotte Featured in Senior Art Exhibition

2017 May 12

The Department of Art and Art History at Eastern Connecticut State University hosted its annual Senior Art Exhibition and Awards Ceremony this May. Graduating student artists were recognized and their work was on display in the Art Gallery from May 5-15.

Among the featured artists was Emily Lizotte '17 of Amston, who majors in Visual Arts and concentrates in sculpture. "My work was created to show that feeling of pure sadness and hopelessness," said Lizotte. "Many people have experienced an event in life that put a great burden on them. They felt like they were being pushed down and couldn't get back up. I suffer from anxiety and depression every day and on a daily basis it is hard for me to do simple tasks like getting out of bed. In creating this work, I wanted to draw the viewers' attention to this constricted human form. My work visually explores the impact that depression and anxiety has on an individual. It brings attention to the very real and often debilitating mental burden."

"Being in the exhibition means so much to me," said Lizotte. "It is a major milestone in my career as an artist. It was one of my first major art pieces and it was a success. Many people during the opening of the gallery said that it was quite powerful and that they really liked it. I think that helped boost my confidence and helped give me the push I need to continue working on finding who I am as an artist, even after college."

The exhibition is exclusive to senior visual arts majors who have successfully completed a senior project in their concentration--digital art and design, drawing and painting, printmaking, sculpture, and illustration.
