Local Eastern Connecticut State University Student From Essex Participates in M.A.A. Collegiate Mathematics Competition

Eastern Connecticut State University ranked sixth at the MAA Collegiate Mathematics Competition which was held on November 19 at Providence College in Providence, RI. Nineteen teams from colleges throughout New England participated in the event.

Antony Pizzoferrato of Essex was one of three students who represented Eastern Connecticut State University at the event. Pizzoferrato '12 is majoring in Mathematics.

Contestants worked in teams and took a two-hour exam featuring problems in geometry, probability, combinatorics, number theory, and other areas of mathematics. Afterwards, participants attended keynote lectures on recreational and applied mathematics and undergraduate student paper sessions. A reception and banquet were also held for students, speakers, and professors.

Prior to the competition, the students were advised by Mizan Khan, Eastern professor of mathematics and Mathematics Department chair, and Christian Yankov, associate professor of mathematics.

Prizes were awarded to the top two teams and all participants received student licenses for Mathematica. The contest was organized by the Math Association of America. The Eastern team ranked quite well, coming in sixth out of 19 teams.
