Local Eastern Student Barbara Jones of Hartford Engaged in Internship

2015 Nov 19

A number of Eastern students commit to student internships as an on-site practical work experience with a company or organization that can provide them with firsthand knowledge of a career field. The internship is usually related to the student's major or is directly related to the student's career interest. They often complement the student's coursework, can incorporate skills and classroom experience into the workplace and assist the student in developing new abilities and skills.

Barbara Jones '15 of Hartford is working as a business assistant intern at the University of Hartford Entrepreneur Center in Hartford. Jones's major is Communication.

As part of her fall 2015 semester internship, Jones assists in marketing a new business. She designs marketing materials and surveys, analyzes data and identifies and assists in building clientele. She also sets up and maintains files and assists with the production of presentations for speaking engagements.

"My favorite thing about my internship is that it is teaching me the step-by-step process of setting up a business and gaining funding. My internship will help me start a business of my own and will enable me to gain financial independence while investing in myself," said Jones.

After graduating, Jones plans to go to graduate school where she can earn a master's degree in social work. She is interested in becoming a cognitive therapist.

Jones said, "I think an internship is important. It can help open doors and is a great introduction to field training. Internships are a valuable experience that can be added to your skill set and often help a new graduate gain employment."
