Eastern and UConn to Volunteer at Windham Day of Caring
Willimantic, CT (09/27/2018) — On Sept. 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., upwards of 200 college students from Eastern Connecticut State University and the University of Connecticut will collaborate with United Way to volunteer for the "Day of Caring." This event is a way of giving back to the community while also teaching students about the positive impact they can have on the lives of local residents.
"Day of Caring" is a year-long global United Way program that encourages volunteerism. Eastern and UCONN have partnered with United Way for the past three years, participating in the Windham Day of Caring. Organizations that students volunteer for include the Garden Club of Windham, Willimantic Whitewater Partnership, Ashford School, Grow Windham, Habitat for Humanity, the Mill Museum and others.
This year's Windham Day of Caring is a large-scale community clean up. Activities will include gardening, painting, cleaning and raking. Students will also make "literacy kits" consisting of a book and an activity to make reading more engaging for children and their families. The kits will be passed out to students in the Windham school system.
At 9 a.m., student volunteers will be dispatched to the following sites for volunteer projects:
