This Friday: Eastern's premier academic conference back in person
Annual CREATE conference showcases the best of student work, April 21
Willimantic, CT (04/18/2023) — The best of undergraduate research and creativity will be on display at Eastern Connecticut State University on April 21 for the annual CREATE conference. Live and in-person for the first time in four years, the university's Student Center will be abustle with hundreds of students presenting oral/poster research, music and theatre performances, artwork and more.
CREATE stands for "Celebrating Research and Creative Activity at Eastern" and is the university's premier undergraduate showcase, featuring more than 200 submissions of student work in culmination of the academic year.

- Concurrent panel discussions and oral presentations featuring students of all academic disciplines will occur throughout the day 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (with a one-hour lunchbreak 12 - 1 p.m.).
- Music performances will occur 1-2 p.m. in the Student Center Theatre.
- Dozens of research posters will be display 4-5 p.m. in the Betty R. Tipton Room.
- Up the hill on the second floor of the Wood Support Center, more than 25 works of art will be on display 1-5 p.m. in the Student Art Gallery.
- An award ceremony will conclude the day at 5 p.m. in the Betty R. Tipton Room, where two students will receive the President's Award for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity and standout faculty members will receive the Mentor Award.
"We are thrilled to have CREATE as an in-person event again this year and to celebrate research excellence and artistic talent at Eastern," said Dean of Education and Professional Studies Niti Pandey and Dean of Arts and Sciences Emily Todd in a joint statement. "The whole event is a testament to the strengths in undergraduate research and creative work at Eastern and the educational opportunities our talented faculty make available to our students through their careful mentoring and commitment to our mission to provide a 'transformative liberal arts learning experience.'"
Panels moderated by faculty will feature readings by Eastern poets and fiction writers, works of literary criticism, a cannabis business session, and a showcase of Eastern students who won awards at the recent Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
Oral presentations throughout the day will cover topics such as sustainability, data science, disability studies, social media and business.
The 70-plus posters on display will cover topics ranging from political extremism and the effects of social media to banned books, the genetics of cannabis and artificial intelligence.
CREATE has been held for more than 20 years, including virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic.
