Four Eastern students were named as recipients of the ECSU Foundation's Victoria Leigh Soto '08 Memorial Endowed Scholarship for the 2014-15 academic year.

The goal of the First-Year Experience is to ensure that every first-time, full-time student makes a successful transition to college. Peer mentors are vital to making that happen.

The Academic Services Center is a free tutoring service where all peer student tutors are selected for their ability and interpersonal skills. Tutors are trained undergraduate peer tutors who help students on a one-on-one basis to improve in any level of class.

During the fall 2014 semester, Eastern Connecticut State University student Sonya Beetham '15, a history major from Montville, received a project grant that supported her research into the life of Pablo Picasso. Entitled "Pablo Picasso in Time and Place," Beetham conducted her research under the mentorship of History Professor Roland Clark.

Eastern Student Dominique DuBois of East Lyme recently received a travel grant so that she could attend and present at the 38th annual International Waterbird Society meeting in La Paz, Mexico.

Eastern student Maggie Bodington of Stratford was recently named as the recipient of the Vicki Soto Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was created in honor of Victoria Leigh Soto '08, who lost her life protecting the children of her first-grade classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Dec. 14, 2012.

Mackenzie Fannon '17 recently presented at the American Geophysical Union's fall conference in San Francisco.

The English Department at Eastern Connecticut State University recently recognized students for demonstrating excellence in writing strategies in the first-year writing program.

Sixteen Environmental Earth Science (EES) students from Eastern Connecticut State University and three of their professors presented findings of their fieldwork along the Rhode Island coastline at the New England Intercollegiate Geological Conference (NEIGC). The conference took place in Oct. at Wellesley College in Massachusetts.

"Love at First Sight: J. Alden Weir and Windham, CT," an Eastern-produced documentary about the accomplished impressionist artist J. Alden Weir, was screened this past December at Eastern Connecticut State University. The documentary was a collaborative effort led primarily by Visual Arts Professor Anne Dawson, Communication Professor Denise Matthews and student Emily Haggett.

Eastern Connecticut State University recently held a free enrichment summer camp for local middleschoolers. The "Puentes al Futuro/Bridges to the Future" camp is run by Eastern's Center for Community Engagement (CCE).

Eastern student Michael Manzi '15, an Environmental Earth Science major, recently traveled to Block Island, RI, to participate in a summer undergraduate research project.

Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) is a national leadership honor society for college men and women. It was founded at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA, in 1914. The Eastern Connecticut State University Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa was installed on May 13, 1994. Eastern is the first and only circle in New England. To date, over 700 faculty, students, alumni, and honorary members have been inducted into Eastern's circle.

A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students recently presented research projects at the 14th Annual Excellence Expo. The event is sponsored by the School of Education/Professional Studies and Graduate Division.

Eastern student Mackenzie Fannon '15 was recently selected as a summer intern for the National Science Foundation-funded Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) program.

Eastern Connecticut State University held its 14th Annual Arts and Sciences Research Conference and Exhibition at the end of the spring semester. The event featured oral and visual presentations of student-led scientific research and artwork. More than 50 presentations were delivered by students from a range of academic departments.

Richard Magner, a mathematics major from Beacon Falls, CT, recently received an Honorable Mention from the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. The Goldwater Scholarship program was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. The program recognizes undergraduate students who demonstrate the potential to make significant research contributions in their future careers.

Eastern Connecticut State University student Eric Cerino, a 2014 graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University, has been named the recipient of a highly competitive Integrative Graduate Education and Reseach Traineeship from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
