Eastern Connecticut State University Students Win Library Research Award

The J. Eugene Smith Library at Eastern Connecticut State University offers an undergraduate student library research award competition each year. The prize has been established to recognize and celebrate exemplary student research projects that demonstrate the ability to locate, evaluate, select and apply information from appropriate resources.

Eastern Connecticut State University Students Participate in "Puentes al Futuro/Bridges to the Future" Summer Camp

Eastern Connecticut State University recently held a five-week summer enrichment camp for local middle school students. The "Puentes al Futuro/Bridges to the Future" camp is run by Eastern's Center for Community Engagement (CCE) and offers academic instruction in math and language arts and cultural enrichment.

Eastern Connecticut State University recently completed its Student Orientation, Advising and Registration (SOAR) program. The program is mandatory for all new first-year students, and took place on campus between June 24-July 16.

Eastern Student Selected for Summer Research Experience at National Institute

Judy Bloom '14, of Marlborough, CT, a biology major at Eastern Connecticut State University, was recently selected by the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) to participate in its highly competitive Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program. The program is currently underway at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville (UTK).

Local Eastern Connecticut State University Students Support Award-Winning Exhibit

Connecticut Main Street Center, a statewide nonprofit agency that inspires great Connecticut downtowns, recently announced that "End of an Era: Past Identity/Future Vision" is the recipient of a 2013 Award of Excellence in the Historic Preservation category. the exhibition was the work of Eastern Connecticut State University Visual Arts Professor June Bisantz and History Lecturer Jamie Eves. Winners of this prestigious award actively champion the revitalization and economic development of downtowns across Connecticut through various initiatives including rebuilding or redesigning downtown spaces. Publicity materials for the exhibit were designed by Eastern Connecticut State University visual arts students. The following local students assisted in designing the promotional materials through participation in Bisantz's spring 2012 semester Art Exhibition Design Class:

Local Eastern Students and Alums Assist in Creating Video for Center for Early Childhood Education

Eastern Connecticut State University's Center for Early Childhood Education (CECE) recently released a new video about a three-year effort to improve the language and early literacy skills of more than 500 children in Windham, Connecticut. In 2008, the center was awarded a U.S. Department of Education Early Reading First grant to implement the Community Partners for Early Literacy (CPEL) project. In partnership with the Windham Early Childhood Center (part of Windham Public Schools) and the Child and Family Development Resource Center (CFDRC) at Eastern, the CECE provided professional development and literacy coaching to 50 teachers and paraprofessionals and supported families in engaging in literacy activities at home.

Local Eastern Students and Alums Assist in Eastern's Community Partners for Early Literacy (CPEL) Program

In 2008, Eastern Connecticut State University's Center for Early Childhood Education (CECE) was awarded a three-year, $3.9 million Early Reading First (ERF) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to implement the Community Partners for Early Literacy (CPEL) project. Eastern was one of only 31 agencies and public school districts throughout the United States to be chosen for "Early Reading First" grants out of nearly 400 applicants. In partnership with the Windham Early Childhood Center (part of the Windham Public Schools) and the Child and Family Development Resource Center (CFDRC) at Eastern, the CECE provided professional development and literacy coaching to 50 teachers and paraprofessionals and supported families in engaging in literacy activities at home. The CPEL program helped approximately 600 preschool-age children in Willimantic and provided Eastern undergraduate and graduate students from various majors with important experiential learning opportunities. The students worked as oral language assessors, classroom substitutes and literacy kit managers, and were considered critical to the project's success.

Local Eastern Connecticut State University Students Participate in National Toy Study

Eastern Connecticut State University faculty and student researchers announced results of the 2012 TIMPANI Toy (Toys That Inspire Mindful Play and Nurture Imagination) study on Nov. 16 in the University's Child and Family Development Resource Center (CFDRC). The annual TIMPANI study is a nationally recognized research project to identify the best toys for promoting the cognitive and social development of young children. The study, conducted through Eastern's Center for Early Childhood Education (CECE), examines how young children in natural settings play with a variety of toys.

Students and staff from Eastern Connecticut State University recently attended this year's National Association for Campus Activities conference in Hartford, CT. Student Campus Activity Board (CAB) coordinators took home honors for several categories including Excellence in Programming, Best Poster, Best Themed Campaign and Best Traditional Promotion for their division.

On Oct. 25, four Eastern Connecticut State University students attended the Family Youth Internet Gambling conference, which was sponsored by the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling (CCPG) at Water's Edge Resort and Spa in Westbrook, CT. The students presented their "Campus Gambling Awareness Program" poster.

Local Eastern Connecticut State University Students Attend Early Childhood Education Conference

More than 125 students, faculty and other early childhood educators attended Eastern Connecticut State University's Early Childhood Investigations Conference on April 27. The conference theme was "Using Projects to Foster Children's Cognitive Development." Visitors from across the state of Connecticut attended the day-long conference, which was co-hosted by the Center for Early Childhood Education and the Child and Family Development Resource Center.

Local Eastern Connecticut State University Students Participate in Pathways to Leadership Program

A number of Eastern Connecticut State University students have been participating in Pathways to Leadership, a tiered student leadership program series. The program has been developed based on Eastern's Strategic Planning Initiative to enhance on-campus culture by providing leadership training experiences for students. All Eastern students interested in developing leadership skills are invited to join the Pathways to Leadership program.

Local Eastern Connecticut State University Students Members of Pride Alliance Club

One of the approximately 70 student clubs and organizations at Eastern Connecticut State University is Eastern's Pride Alliance club. The purpose of the Pride Alliance club is to promote greater campus awareness of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities and to advocate for a safe campus environment regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Local Eastern Students has become members of the Institute of Management Accountants

One of the approximately 70 student clubs and organizations at Eastern Connecticut State University is Eastern's Institute of Management Accountants club. The purpose of the Institute of Management Accountants club is to provide its members with accounting expertise, opportunities, and networking experiences outside of the classroom. The club wants to encourage the professional and personal development of an individual by enhancing communication and organizational skills.
