Eastern Art Gallery presents 'Capturing the Ephemeral'
Exhibition opens spring 2022 semester
Willimantic, CT (01/21/2022) — The Eastern Connecticut State University Art Gallery is kicking off the spring 2022 semester with a new exhibition, "Capturing the Ephemeral: Celebrating Theatre & Performance Media at Eastern," running until Feb. 18. The exhibition will premiere on Thursday, Jan. 27, with an opening reception at 4 p.m. Admission to the gallery is free and open to the public.
Highlighting productions by Eastern's Theatre Program since the opening of the Fine Arts Instructional Center (FAIC) five years ago, "Capturing the Ephemeral" features seven faculty members from the Performing Arts Department.
"This exhibit highlights the collaborative nature of our work - with each other and our amazingly talented students," said exhibition curator Anya Sokolovskaya, professor of theatre and costume design. "It became clear that the best way to do this would be to reveal the unique, imaginative and sometimes intensely personal processes that lead to performance."
By reflecting on past accomplishments, Sokolovskaya hopes that the exhibit will shine a light on Eastern's Theatre Program. The work shown will "offer opportunities to understand our program better; experience behind-the-scenes work by magnifying the 'invisible'; and introduce the faculty's work and how our research and scholarly interests intersect with our shows and contribute to our teaching."
Featured faculty include Alycia Bright Holland, professor of movement and dance; J.J. Cobb, professor of theatre and acting; Brian Day, professor of theatre and filmmaking; Kristen Morgan, professor of theatre and scenography; David Pellegrini, professor of theatre and history; Sokolovskaya, professor of theatre and costume design; and DeRon Williams, professor of theatre and directing. Photographs of their productions and work were captured by photographers Nick Lacey and Tom Hurlbut.
The Art Gallery is located in the Fine Arts Instructional Center (FAIC) and open Monday and Wednesday from noon - 4 p.m.; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from noon - 7 p.m; and Saturday from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. For additional information, contact (860) 465-4625 or visit https://www.easternct.edu/art-gallery/ .
