Eastern Art Gallery to Present 'Creating Dangerously,' a Tribute to Haiti

by Vania Galicia

Willimantic, CT (01/08/2020) — The Art Gallery at Eastern Connecticut State University will present "Creating Dangerously: Art & Revolution" from Jan. 17-Mar. 12 in the Fine Arts Instructional Center. The exhibition is the first of the spring 2020 semester and marks the 10th anniversary of the Haitian earthquake - the deadliest in modern history.

An artist talk featuring Vladimir Cybil Charlier will occur Jan. 23 at 3 p.m., followed by an opening reception from 4-6 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

"Creating Dangerously" presents six exceptional international artists whose work is inspired by Haiti's legacy of slavery, revolution, exile and diaspora. Their works - which engage a knowledge of Haiti that is both lived- in, representational and conceptual - have been set against a backdrop of traditional Haitian art sourced from Eastern's own extensive collection, as well as loans from Trinity College, Pioneer Works (Brooklyn) and private collectors. Together they constitute a lineage that communicates the energy, joy and inspiration of Haiti's world-historical revolution.

Featured artists Vladimir Cybil Charlier, Edouard Duval Carrié, Sasha Huber, Pascale Monnin, Nyugen E. Smith and Didier William challenge Western culture's understanding of Haiti and the Caribbean and offer insight into its current and past political and social standing. The artists' work emphasizes the resilience of Haitian people by communicating optimism and commitment to the survival of their unique culture.

The Art Gallery is open Tuesday and Wednesday 11 a.m.-5 p.m.; Thursday 1-7 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday 2-5 p.m. For more information, contact the Art Gallery at 860-465-4659 or visit the website at http://www.easternct.edu/art-gallery/.
