Eastern expo highlights community service projects

Willimantic, CT (04/06/2023) — The Center for Community Engagement (CCE) at Eastern Connecticut State University will showcase service projects that students have organized in the Windham area at an expo on April 10 from 2-4 p.m. in the Fine Arts Instructional Center lobby. The CCE also will present volunteer awards. The event is open to the public.

This year 552 students volunteered in the Windham area, many for more than one program, logging 8,421 volunteer hours. Students will present posters at the expo showing their work at 15 community sites.

The keynote speaker for the event is Shasity Rios, director of school and site-based programs for Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Connecticut, which supports one-to-one mentoring for youth.

The Service-Learning Award will be given to Stacey Brown, lecturer in Eastern's sociology department. The Community Program Award will go to Jean de Smet, Windham Community Garden projects. Community engagement awards will go to Sarah Tompkins, women's soccer coach at Eastern; Kelly Mills, the volunteer manager at Windham Recovery Community Center and Eastern student Cailey Soper '25.
