Eastern's Torcellini Named ASHRAE Fellow

Willimantic, CT (02/12/2020) — Paul Torcellini of Eastford, professor of environmental earth science, was recently named a fellow of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). Torcellini was recognized with 32 other recipients at the 2020 winter conference hosted in Atlanta, GA.

ASHRAE is a global society devoted to promoting sustainable technology with almost 60,000 members worldwide. Members focus on building systems, refrigeration, energy efficiency, indoor air quality and sustainability. This year marks ASHRAE's 125th anniversary.

After receiving his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Torcellini received both his master's degree and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. He has served as a principal engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) since 1994. Prior to this recognition, Torcellini has received two ASHRAE technology awards for his work with energy-efficient buildings.

Along with his work as a mechanical engineer, Torcellini has also made a lasting impact on the Eastern community. He is the endowed chair for Sustainable Energy Studies and has worked with Institute for Sustainable Energy (ISE) and the Facilities Planning and Management Department on furthering Eastern's sustainability initiatives through the university's Green Campus Committee. Eastern was recently named a 'Green College' by the Princeton Review for the 10th year in a row. He is focused on preparing his students for the green economy.
