He has served as a principal engineer at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) since 1994. Prior to this recognition, Torcellini has received two ASHRAE technology awards for his work with energy-efficient buildings.

Along with his work as a mechanical engineer, Torcellini has also made a lasting impact on the Eastern community. He is the endowed chair for Sustainable Energy Studies and has worked with Institute for Sustainable Energy (ISE) and the Facilities Planning and Management Department on furthering Eastern's sustainability initiatives through the university's Green Campus Committee.
