Eastern to host traffic stop simulation event for autistic drivers and passengers
Willimantic, CT (03/20/2026) — Eastern Connecticut State University will host a community event on April 11 designed to support autistic drivers and passengers who may one day encounter a police traffic stop.
- What: "Traffic Stop Practice: Supporting Autistic Drivers and Passengers"
- When: Saturday, April 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- Where: J. Eugene Smith Library parking lot and Paul E. Johnson Sr. Community Room
The program offers participants the opportunity to engage in simulated traffic stops with local police officers in a safe, controlled environment. The goal is to reduce anxiety, build confidence, and foster understanding through preparation and hands-on experience.
Participants will learn what to expect during a routine traffic stop, practice communication strategies, and become familiar with Connecticut's Department of Motor Vehicles "Blue Envelope" program, which helps facilitate clearer communication between drivers with autism and law enforcement.
The event is open to autistic drivers and passengers. Drivers who wish to participate must have a valid license or learner's permit and bring their own registered and insured vehicle.
"Programs like this give individuals with autism and their families the opportunity to practice what a traffic stop looks like in a safe, supportive environment," said Eastern Police Chief Stephen Tavares. "The goal is to reduce anxiety, improve communication, and build understanding between law enforcement and individuals on the autism spectrum."
The initiative is presented in partnership with the Southern Connecticut State University Center of Excellence on Autism Spectrum Disorders, along with the Eastern, Willimantic, and Coventry police departments.
"The program reflects a shared commitment to community safety, education, and building trust between public safety professionals and the communities we serve," Tavares added.
